Bronze Outdoors: What Weather Does to the Finish
Bronze left outside changes colour every season. What importers should sell, wax and warn customers about, written from a Vietnamese foundry floor.
Bronze kept outdoors does not hold the colour it shipped in. Inside one wet season the high points brighten, the hollows darken, and rain running off the piece streaks one side. That is weathering, not a casting fault. Your work as the importer is to pick the right finish for outdoor use, say plainly what is coming, and put a wax routine in the carton.
Two roads a piece can take outside
A sealed piece leaves us with a patina, lacquer over it and wax over that. The wax wears first, which is the point: wax is cheap to replace, lacquer is not. Re-waxed twice a year the lacquer stays sound; skipped for a few years it fails in patches, and the piece needs stripping and recoating.
An open piece is waxed only, or bare, and is meant to move. Brown drifts to brown-green, then to an uneven green-grey — darker where water sits, lighter where hands and weather rub it. Once that layer forms it protects the metal beneath. Tell that customer at the counter that year three will not look like week one. Both roads are decided on the order, and the eight finishes we apply behave differently outside.
What actually attacks the surface
- Standing water in hollows, bowl rims and open crane wings. Drainage is a drawing decision, not a field repair.
- Irrigation spray, especially hard or chlorinated water, which leaves a white mineral crust that looks like a defect and is not.
- Salt — coastal air, and road de-icing salt thrown up in winter. This is the fastest way to pit a surface.
- Bird droppings, acidic enough to etch lacquer within days in summer.
- Pressure washers, steel wool and abrasive pads, which strip more patina in ten minutes than weather takes off in ten years.
- Soil and fertiliser banked against a base.
A routine you can print and put in the box

Two thin wax coats beat one thick one, and water trapped under wax fogs the surface. The indoor version of this routine is in bronze care and storage for distributors.
What we cast differently when a piece is going outside
- Metal where the load is. Our standard body wall is 5 mm, going to 8 mm at load-bearing points — feet, handles, joints, the neck of a crane. Outdoors that decides whether a piece survives being lifted by one wing.
- Fixing built in, not drilled later. Say before casting whether the piece is bolted, pinned or free-standing, and we cast the base to suit.
- Weep holes placed on the drawing for anything that can hold water.
- Tolerance stated up front. Hand casting varies: 1–3 cm off the drawing is normal and we say so; more than 5 cm is a fault and we recast. If a mason pours a plinth before the piece lands, build that window into his measurements.
- Time. Casting runs 21–30 days after the drawing or sample is approved. Count an opening date backwards from that, plus sea time.
Weight is the first number your landscaper asks for
Solid cast bronze is heavier than photographs suggest. For a sense of the density, a size-65 five-piece altar set — an indoor product cast to the same wall thickness — runs about 36 kg, its crane standing 5–7 cm taller than the burner. A two-person lift long before it looks like one.

What we will not tell you
- No lifespan in years. Nobody can give an honest figure for a microclimate they have never stood in.
- No audit certificate. We hold no ISO, BSCI or SEDEX certification and say so wherever it comes up. Instead: a video call from the floor, a visit to the foundry, or the pieces in front of you in our showrooms in Nam Dinh, Hanoi and Hai Phong.
- No claim that a patina is a weatherproof coating. Patina is a surface, wax is the sacrificial layer, maintenance is the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Will an outdoor piece turn green?
Over years, if it is not sealed and re-waxed, yes — unevenly, and faster in salt air. A lacquered and waxed piece holds its shipped colour far longer, provided the wax is replaced twice a year.
Can you supply pieces already finished to look weathered?
Yes. A green-toned patina is applied at the bench and carries a finish code on the order, so a reorder can be matched to it. It is a finish, not accelerated weathering, and it still needs wax.
Do you lacquer everything before shipping?
No — it is your call on the order. Garden retail usually wants lacquer; altar customers often want wax only, because lacquer changes how the surface takes smoke and handling.
A piece arrives with a scratched finish. Is that a claim?
A damaged finish is a claim; a colour that reads differently under your shop lights usually is not. Photograph it in daylight beside the carton and its label before unpacking further.
Can you cast a heavier base or a fixing plate?
Yes, if it is on the drawing before the mould is made. Adding a plate afterwards means welding and refinishing, which shows.
