Ordering a Custom Temple Incense Burner: Steps and Drawings

A custom temple incense burner is ordered in four steps: brief, drawing and approval, casting, and a planned delivery. The temple committee fixes the site limits and the inscription first. Then we propose a drawing, you approve the pattern or a sample in writing, and the piece is cast and finished. Casting takes 21–30 days once the pattern is approved, plus finishing and freight. Settle the crating, the lift at the temple and the base before the metal is poured.

What should a temple committee decide first?

Large commissions stall when the foundry receives five sets of opinions. Agree these points inside the committee and send one answer:

• Who signs off the drawing and the sample, and who pays the deposit
• The height that matters, and whether it includes the base or lid
• The motif: dragons, lotus, clouds, or a reference photograph of a piece the committee likes
• The exact wording of any inscription and who has checked it
• The finish, and whether the piece stands indoors or under a roof
• The date of the ceremony, working back to the date the piece must arrive

Which dimensions and weight limits does the site impose?

A censer that can't get through the door, or that the floor can't carry, is the most expensive mistake in a commission. Before we draw anything, measure:

• The narrowest opening on the route from the delivery truck to the final position: gate, door, stair or lift
• The ceiling or roof height above the spot, including any lamp or beam
• What the floor is made of. Ask your contractor what load it can take. Bronze is dense, and a large solid censer and its base weigh far more than a wooden altar of the same size
• The size of the base or plinth it will stand on

We state the estimated cast weight on the quotation so your contractor can check the floor before you order.

How are drawing, model and inscription approved?

The route is the same as any cast-to-order piece, described on our OEM and tooling page:

1. Brief and references. Send a drawing if you have one. If not, send photographs and the dimensions. Our guide on sending a drawing for a casting quote lists what we need.
2. Feasibility and quotation within two working days. We say whether it can be cast as drawn, and what we would change.
3. Pattern. We photograph it with a tape in the frame, so the committee can approve form and detail before any metal is poured.
4. Inscription. Send the text as a file, never retyped from a phone photograph, and have someone who reads the script check our layout before approval. Text is cast into the pattern, so a mistake found after pouring means a re-cast.
5. Approval in writing of the pattern, the finish and the text. Anything to change is changed on the pattern, not argued about later.

How long does a large censer take?

Casting takes 21–30 days from approval of the pattern. Chasing, patina and gilding on a large piece are hand work that we quote separately. Sea freight comes after that. The approval stage is usually the longest part of a temple commission, because the committee meets only so often. Build it into the plan. The weeks before Lunar New Year are the busiest of the year, so a piece for a Tết ceremony should be approved well before them.

How is one heavy piece crated and lifted?

A single large casting travels in its own wooden crate, braced so it cannot move and with load kept off the handles and legs. ISPM-15 heat-treated timber is available for markets that require it. Tell us at order stage so the documents match. Plan the destination too: who unloads the crate, whether the truck has a tail lift or needs a forklift, and how many people will carry it the last few metres. Who handles the base and installation?

We cast the bronze. The stone or wooden base, anchoring and installation at the temple are usually handled by your local contractor, who knows the building and the local rules. We send the footprint and the fixing points once the pattern is approved, so the base can be built in parallel with the casting rather than after it arrives.

1. Photographs of the spot where the censer will stand, from the doorway and from close up
2. The narrowest opening on the delivery route
3. The floor type and your contractor's load limit
4. The inscription text as a file, checked by a reader of the script
5. The motif or reference photographs
6. The finish, and indoor or covered outdoor use
7. The ceremony date and the latest arrival date
8. The port you will receive at, and your forwarder if you have one

Frequently asked questions

Can you cast Chinese characters or Vietnamese text?

Send the exact text as vector artwork or a clean file, and have it checked before approval. It is cast into the pattern, raised or recessed, as on our plaques.

Is a large censer cast in one piece or assembled?

That depends on the size and the design. We say which at the feasibility stage and show the joints on the pattern photographs, so the committee knows before approving.

Can it stand outdoors?

Tell us at the brief. Some finishes suit a covered courtyard better than others, and we will recommend one from our finishes.

Can we change the design after approval?

Changes before the pattern is approved cost little. After approval, a change means reworking the pattern, which adds time and cost that we quote before starting.
