What a Vietnamese foundry actually casts in bronze statuary, how sizes and weights run, and what to settle before you order a mixed pallet of statues.
This is devotional and decorative bronze statuary cast at a village foundry in Dong Quy, Nam Truc, Nam Dinh — deity figures, animals, portrait busts, commissioned pieces. It is not war memorials or public monuments, which is what most searches for Vietnamese bronze statues return. Below: what we cast, how sizes and weights run, and what a wholesale buyer should settle before ordering a mixed pallet.
What kinds of bronze statues does the foundry cast?
Four groups cover almost every order that leaves the workshop.
- Devotional figures. Buddha, Quan Am, Tran Hung Dao, ancestral and temple figures — ordered by altar shops, temples and distributors.
- Animals and altar creatures. Cranes, lions, horses, elephants, turtles. Cranes are sized against the censer they stand beside, not chosen freely.
- Portrait busts. Cast from photographs or a clay model. Memorial and commission work; every one is a new mould.
- Feature pieces. Courtyard and lobby work to a drawing, cast in sections.

How do sizes and weights run?
Height decides how a piece is cast, what it costs to ship, and whether we can repeat it.

Weight climbs faster than the eye expects: double a figure’s height and you roughly multiply the bronze in it by eight. For a fixed point, a size-65 five-piece altar set weighs about 36 kg. Statue weights are stated on the quotation rather than published, because two pieces of the same nominal height can differ by a kilogram depending on how the pour ran.
Solid or hollow, and why it matters for freight
Small figures come out effectively solid. Anything over roughly 60 cm is hollow, and the useful number is the wall: 5 mm through the body, 8 mm where the piece carries load — a base, an ankle, a joint between sections. Ask us to confirm it in writing on your order.
So a hollow 100 cm figure is not eight times the weight of a 50 cm one — ask for the weight table before you book freight. Wall thickness is also the honest measure of how much metal you are paying for; a supplier who will not state a wall is worth a second look.
Can I order one design in several sizes?
Yes, within limits. A design scaled to a new height needs a new mould, so three sizes of one figure is three tooling jobs. Two fixed relationships apply when statuary stands on an altar beside a censer:
- Cranes stand 5–7 cm taller than the censer they flank.
- Candlesticks sit 12–15 cm shorter than the censer.
Hand casting also has a tolerance, and we say it plainly: 1–3 cm off nominal is normal and is not a defect; more than 5 cm off is a reject and we remake it. A purchase order demanding exact heights asks for something no sand-cast foundry can meet.
What is made to order and what can be repeated?
Anything cast from a mould we hold can be repeated. Anything new — your drawing, a portrait, a rescaled figure — is 21–30 days of casting after drawing approval, plus finishing days for gilding, inlay or enamel. Stock sizes ship sooner. Work of this kind is quoted from a drawing on custom and OEM casting.

How do statues pack for sea freight?
Pieces under 60 cm are wrapped, boxed and crated on a pallet. Sectional pieces travel as sections, with the joining hardware bagged and labelled to the piece. A heavy single figure gets its own crate with a bolted base. Tell us what your receiving end can lift before we pack — a crate nobody can get off the truck is a problem we can prevent here, not after landing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the largest statue you can cast?
Above 150 cm we cast in sections over an internal armature and assemble, so height is limited by your drawing and your freight, not by the furnace. Send the drawing and we will say how many sections it becomes.
Can you cast from a photograph the customer sends?
For portrait busts and simple figures, yes — we model first and send photographs of the model for approval before any metal is poured. A flat photograph of an ornate figure is weaker than a drawing or a sample.
Do you number editions?
Not by default. If you want a numbered or marked run for your own programme, say so before the mould is made and we cast the mark in rather than stamping it afterwards.
If I reorder the same model a year later, will the colour match?
Close, not identical. Patina is a chemical finish on a hand-poured surface. We keep the finish record against your item code; a set that must match on one shelf should be ordered in one lot.
How does a garden statue differ from an indoor one?
Mainly the base and the finish: outdoor pieces get a heavier, drainable base and a finish chosen to weather rather than hold a polish. Say at enquiry which pieces go outside.
